532 — Nika riots in Constantinople; the cathedral was destroyed. They were put down a week later by Belisarius and Mundus; up to 30,000 people were killed in the Hippodrome.

Under the leadership of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, general Belisarius fought many campaigns defeating, among others, the Vandals in North Africa, bringing their kingdom to an end.
During the climate changes of 535–536, the sun reportedly became very dim and the weather was extraordinarily cold. This may have been caused by a huge volcanic eruption (possibly Krakatoa).
