The province is bordered by Central Sulawesi province to the north, South East Sulawesi province to the east and West Sulawesi province to the west (West Sulawesi province was split from South Sulawesi in 2004). The capital of South Sulawesi is Makassar.

The AGI Security Information Network released news that a suspected birdflu outbreak has occurred recently. "In the last two days, 17 people from Lorong Pekuburan in Jl Patte’ne, Biringkanaya District, Makassar, South Sulawesi were being hospitalized since they were suspected to have bird flu. In addition, last week tens of chickens in their domicile died due to bird flu."
