WSYN (103.1 FM) is an oldies music formatted radio station licensed to Surfside Beach, South Carolina and serves the Grand Strand area. The Cumulus Media outlet is licensed by the FCC to broadcast at 103.1 MHz with an ERP of 8 kW. The station goes by the name Sunny 103.1 and its current slogan is "The Grand Strand's Greatest Hits."

The station airs Scott Shannon's The True Oldies Channel from ABC Radio[1] mostly, with the exception being The John Boy and Billy Big Show mornings.

Station history

WSYN was previously WAZX, a top 40 station in Georgetown, South Carolina. In 1988, the station increased its power to 50,000 watts and changed to the Sunny 106.5 name and WSYN call letters, with a hot adult contemporary format. The format was oldies from 1990 to 2008. During its heyday of playing Oldies radio on the coast of South Carolina, WSYN served as home to many well-known local talents, including Gary "The Freakin' Deacon" Dawson, Kemosabi Joe Johnson, Sissy Hall, and djrockinray, as well as morning show host Lou Krieger, Randy Clemens, Al Connors, syndicated host Marty Thompson, plus weekend hosts Jimmy Ocean and Dianne Costello. Horry County Council Chair Liz Gilland previously hosted a Sunday morning gospel program on the station. Frank Barnhill served as the News and Sports Director for the station during two different tenures, for many years dating back to the 1990s. His position was eliminated by Market Manager Layne Ryan in May, 2007[citation needed].

On April 2, 2008, Connors and Krieger, who were the only DJs still working for the station, said they were told "restructuring" was planned and they too would lose their jobs.[2] WSYN and WYAK switched frequencies and were reborn as Sunny 103.1 WSYN and The Coyote 106.5 (WLFF)[3].
