"Zayd" ("زيد") also transliterated as "Zaid," "Zeid," "Zayed" and "Seyd" is an Arabic name, meaning abundance or growth or "one who progresses and makes other people progress." The name is not to be confused with the name Sa'id, which has a different meaning, spelling and pronunciation.
The most famous person in Islam named Zayd is Zayd ibn Harithah, who was the orphan boy fostered by the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, who treated him as his own son to the extent, that he was called "Zayd ibn Muhammad," (which is Arabic for "Zayd the son of Muhammad") instead of Zayd ibn Harithah ("Zayd the son of Harithah"). Zayd ibn Harithah is also the only Sahaba mentioned by name in the holy Qur'an. Another well-known Islamic figure with the name of Zaid is Zaid ibn Thabit.
